Welcome to the website of Vatcharin Bhumichitr or ‘Vatch’ as he is generally known.

Born and educated in Bangkok, after graduating in Bangkok he moved to London in 1976 to study at the London College of Printing and graduated in 1979. In 1980 he opened the Thai shop in London, importing fresh and packaged foods, books and magazines from Thailand. His customers were the Thai community in England and the small number of locals who had a liking for Thai food, which was hardly known in Europe, with only a handful of Thai restaurants in England.

In 1980 he opened his first restaurant in Earl’s Court, London going on in 1982 to open the Chiang Mai Restaurant in Soho London which became one of the best known Thai restaurants in England, and is still popular today. He subsequently opened the Thai Garden Vegetarian Restaurant the Thai Bistro and S.E.W.9 in London, The Chiang Rai in Manchester and Tamarind in North Beach Miami.

In 1983 his first book, A Taste of Thailand, was published, combining recipes with descriptions and photographs of the different regions of Thailand, the book was a great success and is still in print. This was followed by Thai Vegetarian Cooking, Vatch’s Thai Cookbook, Vatch’s South-East Asian Cookbook, Vatch’s South-East Asian Salads, Vatch’s Street Food, Vatch’s Stylish Thai in Minutes, Vatch’s Thai Kitchen, Vatch’s Big Book of Thai Curries, and most recently The Big Book of Noodles.

Vatch’s university studies were in Art and Graphics and he has pursued his interest in art along with the restaurants and cookery books. Exhibitions of his work ‘Electric Nature’ modern graphics inspired by Thai fruit and vegetables, were held in Bangkok in 2000 and 2002 and he has shown at the Royal Academy Summer show.

His latest projects are a Cinnamon,a resort in Koh Samui, and La Bhusalah, in the countryside near Chiang Mail, a resort which incorporates a small cooking school and facilities for art courses. Nearby he has just opened a noodle restaurant.
